metal works

In her often life-size sculptures and sculpture groups, Dana Meyer brings the material steel to life; the resistance of the material is both an attraction and a challenge. Dana Meyer forges the material for her sculptures under heavy hammers. The artist welds the individual forged segments into figures. She attaches just as much importance to the spaces and open volumes as to the steel sections. At first glance, the figures appear self-contained and homogeneous. Only then do attentive viewers notice that the sculptures have been assembled from individual fragments. A closer look reveals the idiosyncratic dynamics of the figures. The individual pieces result in the interplay of animal musculature and thus create the impression of movement. Dana Meyer thus lends her sculptures a lightness that forms a marked contrast to the hard and heavy steel. The works live from their inner tension, their expressiveness and their spatial presence.
